the algorithm doesn't find matches one at a time. instead it does two passes over the entire input - one right-to-left, one left-to-right - and marks all match boundaries in those two passes. the total work is linear in the input length regardless of how many matches there are. one match or ten thousand, it's the same two passes. no restarting from each position, no triangular sum. same example as before:
